The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is launching soon. Learn how it differs from the traditional Schengen visa and what it means for travelers.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. It's similar to the USA's ESTA system.

Who Needs ETIAS?

Starting in 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries (including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan) will need ETIAS before entering the Schengen Area.

ETIAS vs Schengen Visa

ETIAS

  • For visa-exempt nationalities
  • Online application (takes ~10 minutes)
  • Fee: approximately EUR 7
  • Valid for 3 years
  • Allows stays up to 90 days in 180 days
  • Multiple entries

Schengen Visa

  • For nationalities requiring a visa
  • In-person application at embassy/consulate
  • Fee: EUR 80 (adults)
  • Valid for specific dates
  • Duration varies by visa type
  • Single, double, or multiple entries

Countries Covered by ETIAS

ETIAS will be required for entry to all 30 Schengen countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

How to Apply for ETIAS

1. Visit the official ETIAS website

2. Complete the online form with passport details

3. Answer security questions

4. Pay the EUR 7 fee

5. Receive authorization via email (usually within minutes)

Timeline

  • **2026**: ETIAS expected to launch
  • All visa-exempt travelers should apply before departure
  • The system aims to enhance border security while simplifying travel

What Doesn't Change

  • UK citizens still need ETIAS (not visa-free anymore post-Brexit)
  • Irish citizens exempt (Common Travel Area agreement)
  • Visa-required nationalities still need Schengen visas
